There are 2,064 combat Veterans in Delaware from the Iraq/Afghanistan war alone. The average enlistment age for the Veterans was 20 years of age. Our Veterans from wars previous fight poverty, addiction and homelessness on a daily basis. A grim future awaits many of our country’s heroes. The Wilmington VA Hospital acts a mental and physical health resource, as well as a resource for finding work for all Veterans of the United States Military, and our Veterans need our help. Hockessin Athletic Club has launched the HAC Salutes campaign in an effort to raise $10,000 for the Wilmington VA Hospital. You can participate by purchasing one flag that will line our drive for $25.00 or 5 flags for $100.
The Wilmington VA Hospital has been established since 1946 and is located on Kirkwood Highway. The hospital has a 60-bed operating capacity and a 60-bed community living center for extended care. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs says that “The Wilmington VA Hospital is a teaching hospital; it provides a full range of patient care services with state-of-the-art technology. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and extended care.” All of the money collected from the purchase of the HAC flags will go to the Wilmington VA Hospital. All cash donations that are given to the hospital go towards hygiene products, refreshment supplies, cable television for spinal cord injury patients and recreational activities.
Many troops have lost their lives in combat. Even more have lost their lives at home. Will you salute? Thank our Veterans and let’s watch our flags fly high.
