I’m sure you’ll enjoy these new creations a latte, but for those of you that don’t know the difference between them all, we will explain.

Many people wonder what the difference between coffee and espresso is. A 2013 article from Discovery Communications explains it perfectly when they say “Drip coffee is made by dripping boiling water over ground coffee, which is ground more coarsely than espresso coffee. The water filters through the coffee and falls into a pot. This process is slower than the espresso process, and hot water is in contact with the ground coffee for much longer. Surprisingly, a cup of drip coffee has more caffeine than a shot of espresso.” The reason that drip coffee has more caffeine is because the water has been in contact with the bean for a longer period of time. Espresso is made by pushing steam through finely ground and tightly packed beans for a shorter amount of time.

After ‘pulling the espresso,’ which is a barista term for making a shot of espresso, it can be made into many different drinks. The difference between a latte, a cappuccino and a macchiato is the amount of milk and foam added in with the espresso. A latte is made with a shot of espresso poured into the bottom of a mug and topped with steamed milk and a thin layer of foam. A cappuccino is also made with a shot of espresso but the milk and foam roles are reversed, there is a lot of foam and very little milk. This drink gives a much stronger coffee flavor. Lastly we have the macchiato, it is jam packed with intense coffee flavor and its super simple to make. All a macchiato has is espresso and a little foam, absolutely no milk is required.

Come into our Café to try out our new barista bar and have a piping hot cup of our good ‘ol Joe or any other fancy drinks!
