Summer is just around the corner, and summer means beach season. With beach season, people feel urgency to get into the best shape that they can possibly get to in time for spring/summer. Here are some basic pointers to help get you to where you want to be.

1. Become more active!

It’s all about calories in versus calories out. Be it indoors at a gym or outdoors on the trails, exercise is exercise. There are always a variety of options at a fitness facility. Be it free weights, cardio, Group Fitness classes, small group classes, or personal training. Normally it’s recommended that 30 minutes of cardio be done at least 3 times per week, along with resistance training. If you aren’t too familiar due to the lost feeling everyone initially gets, personal training would actually be your best bet. You will know that you are in the hands of a professional, you will be accountable with a custom made plan that always changes, and, most importantly, you won’t hurt yourself or plateau.

2. Develop better eating habits!

In this case: less is more, and more is less! By that I mean this: eat more quality meals with less quantity calories. No matter the length you need to hit your initial goal, you always have to be conscious about what you put into your body. Lean protein, complex carbs, lots of veggies, fruits, dairy etc. Make sure that everything is in moderation and frequent (at least 5 small nutrient dense meals a day). This is often the bigger part of the battle because this is where the biggest change of habit takes place. It can be done – just be more mindful about what you put into your body to get the most out of it.

3. Be sure to rest for recovery!

If you work hard and play hard, then resting will your best friend. Resting is when your body takes the time to heal from the vigorous activity from exercise and muscle tissue breakdown. And keep in mind, all of those quality nutrient dense calories that was noted earlier is what aids in the recovery process. See how everything works together?

4. Commitment!

The saying goes “where there’s a will, there’s a way.” With that comes various options. There are options all around, but obviously if you want the best results in the quickest amount of time, personal training is your best bet. Why? Customized plans that always change with every workout so you don’t plateau. Personal training is an investment in yourself. It keeps your best interests in mind, and it makes you accountable.

Keep this in mind: those who want a quick fix only come for a small amount of time. Those that are already ready for the beach train year ’round!
