According to the National Down Syndrome Society, (NDSS), National Down Syndrome Awareness Month is not about spreading the word about the disabilities of those with Down Syndrome, but about celebrating the abilities of those individuals. Through partnerships and fundraising events, we are proud to have been able to support the Down Syndrome community and watch many young men and women blossom into healthy, independent adults.
Hockessin Athletic Club is a huge supporter of the local community for those with intellectual disabilities. We partner with the Chester County Discover Program, providing young individuals the opportunity to learn valuable workplace skills in the HAC Cafe, Grounds and Maintenance, and Housekeeping departments. Additionally, HAC Personal Trainer, Kristi Leigh Morgan, organized HAC’s Community Fitness Fridays, which are trainer led exercise sessions open to anyone with intellectual disabilities, member or not.
For fundraisers and events, every year, HAC Summer Campers and Counselors work hard to raise money for Special Olympics Delaware and the Delaware Foundation Reaching Citizens (DFRC) through activities and events that take place all summer long. Our 7 year total is nearly $60,000! HAC has also been home to the 300+ person Hand-In-Hand celebration for DFRC the last three years, as well as proud supporters of the annual Blue/Gold Game. For the first time, however, we are incredibly excited to announce that we are hosting the 2016 DFRC Holidazzle. Tickets are just $75 per person and include heavy hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, and a great silent auction. For more information, visit http://bit.ly.com/holidazzle.
